Cleanliness (Taharah) is a necessary precondition of Islamic worship. Wudu is an essential part of Cleanliness. Salah (prayer) is invalid without Wudu’ or Tayammum(dry Ablution). Allah says in the Qur’an: « Surely Allah loves those who turn to Him and those who care for cleanliness » (2:22).

How to Make Wudu: Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1

First, make Niyyah (Intention) that you are making Wudu’ for Salaah and begin saying. « Bismillah » (In the name of Allah, the most merciful and the most kind). Wash both hands up to the wrist three times, ensuring water has reached between the fingers.

Step 2

Put a handful of water into your mouth and rinse it thoroughly three times.

Steps 3 & 4

Sniff water gently into your nostrils three times to clean them, and then wash the tip of the nose.

Steps 5 & 6

Wash your face three times from the lobe of your right ear to your left ear and from your hairline (forehead) to your chin.

Step 7

Wash your right arm and then your left arm thoroughly from the wrist up to (including) your elbow three times.

Step 8

Move the wet palms over the head from the top of the forehead to the back of the head.

Step 9

Pass the wet tips of index fingers into the grooves and holes of both ears and the wet thumbs behind the ears.

Step 10

Finally, wash both feet to (including) the ankles starting from the right, ensuring that water has reached between the toes and all other parts of the feet.

At the end of the above steps, recite: I testify that there is no god but Allah, and He is One and has no partner, and I also testify that Muhammad is His servant and messenger.

Dua After Wudu

I testify that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah alone, and I testify that Muhammad is his slave and his Messenger. (Muslim)

O Allah, make me among those who repent and keep (themselves) pure. (Tirmidhi)

Whenever water is unavailable, or water is just enough for drinking, or the water is unhealthy, Tayammum (Dry ablution) can be performed in such a situation. Make Niyat (intention to purify yourself in the heart), then start by saying ‘Bismillah’ (In the Name of Allah).

  1. Place the palm of both hands on clean earth or dust, e.g., a wall or stone.
  2. Then blow into your palms.
  3. Wipe the palms of both your hands over the face.
  4. In the last, wipe your right palm with your left palm.
  5. Make Du‘a.

Seven benefits of remaining in Wudu at all times

Anyone who remains in the state of Wudu at all times will be rewarded with seven bounties by Allah SWT:

  1. Angels will be eager to accompany him.
  2. The holy pen will constantly write good deeds for him.
  3. His body parts will do Tasbih.
  4. He will not miss his Takbeer-e-Aula of Salah.
  5. Allah will send angels to protect him from the evil of jinns and humans when he sleeps.
  6. He will have an easy death.
  7. He will remain in the protection of Allah for as long as he is in the state of Wudu. (Ibid, pp.702, 703)

Anyone who dies with Wudu is a martyr.

If you can remain in Wudu at all times, then do so since martyrdom is recorded for anyone in [the state of] Wudu when the angel of death removes his soul. (Shu’ab-ul-Iman, vol. 3, pp. 29, Hadees 2783)
