In Islam, there is a strong emphasis on treating one’s neighbors with respect and kindness. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught that a person’s neighbor has rights that are equal to or even greater than the rights of family members. These rights include the right to privacy, the right to be treated with respect, and the right to be protected from harm. Muslims are encouraged to be good neighbors and build strong and supportive communities.

In Islam, it is considered a virtue to be neighborly and a sin to harm or annoy one’s neighbor.

In Islam, neighbors have certain rights that Muslims are encouraged to uphold. These include:

  1. Treating neighbors with kindness and respect. This includes speaking kindly to them and not causing them harm or annoyance.
  2. Offering help and assistance to neighbors in need. This can include offering to help with errands or lending a hand in times of hardship.
  3. Visiting neighbors when they are sick and offering condolences when they are grieving.
  4. Be considerate of neighbors regarding noise and other potential nuisances. Muslims are encouraged to be mindful of the impact their actions have on their neighbors and to make an effort to minimize any adverse effects.
  5. Joining together with neighbors to make their community a better place. This can include participating in community clean-up events or working together to address issues of concern in the neighborhood.

It is worth noting that these are not only the rights of neighbors in Islam but also the moral obligations of Muslims.

In Islam, treating one’s neighbors kindly and respectfully is a fundamental virtue. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is reported to have said: « By Allah, he is not a believer! By Allah, he is not a believer! By Allah, he is not a believer. » He was asked, « Who is that, O Messenger of Allah? » He said, « The one whose neighbor does not feel safe from his evil. » (Saheeh al-Bukhari) This Hadith highlights the importance of being a good neighbor in the eyes of Islam. Additionally, Muslims are encouraged to be kind to their neighbors, even if they are not of the same faith. The Qur’an states, « Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, and to parents do good, and to relatives, orphans, the needy, the near neighbor, the neighbor farther away, the companion at your side, the traveler, and those whom your right hands possess. Indeed, Allah does not like those who are self-deluding and boastful » (An-Nisa 4:36)

In a comprehensive Hadith that has a good chain of narrators, Mu’adh bin Jabal said: « we said: O Messenger of Allah! What are the rights of a neighbour? He said: « if he asks for a loan, give itto him; if he asks for help, help him; if he is in need, give him; if he falls ill, visit him; when he dies, follow his funeral procession; if something good happens to him, be pleased and congratulate him; if something bad happens to him, be displeased and console him. Do not hurt him by the aroma of your cooking potunless you intend to send him some of your food; do not raise your building high to overlook him and block the wind except by his permission. If you buy things, offer him some, or carry them into your house secretly. »
